Combiphon®
Locating plastic pipes acoustically
As plastic pipes are not electrically conductive, they cannot be located with the classic
electro-magnetical method. Another principle in pipe location is used with the acoustic
method: the pipes transmit mechanical vibrations better than the it surrounding soil. The
vibrations are transmitted along the pipe and over the soil to the surface where they can
be detected by a microphone (AQUAPHON®). Just as with the acoustic location of water
leaks, indicates the highest intensity the position of the pipe. Basically fibre cement or
metallic pipes can also be located with this method.
The System COMBIPHON® consists of the central
control unit generator G5 and different pulse
generators.
Service pipes
(Water or gas)
are set vibrating by the knocker. It knocks just as
an electrical hammer from the outside onto the
pipe. Pipes filled with gas or air are not always
unproblematic, as the conducting water column is
missing.

Main pipes - water
require more energy to be set vibrating. The water
column is set into motion by abstraction of water
from a hydrant. The water column is restricted in
intervals by a shutoff device, the stopper. The
created pressure waves transmit and can be
located, even over long distances.

When e. g. locating a service pipe, it is not necessary for the user to go back to the point
of coupling to modify the intensity. This is necessary as it is impossible to work with high
intensity near house walls (contamination of sound), but more power is required on longer
distances. Transmitting ranges of approx. 30 m from the cellar and up to 300 m on the
outside are possible.
