Location system for pig systems and piping
Pigs are used in pipeline and pipe construction for cleaning, evacuating, batch separation
and calibration of newly-laid systems or those in operation. Should the pig get stuck, then
rapid and easy location of its position is needed.
Another application involves locating a piping route.
The SEWERIN pig location system is very easy to operate and can be used on metal and
non-metal piping.
Mode of operation
The equipment consists of a pig transmitter and a pig location receiver with ferrite search
coil.
The pig transmitter is either linked to a pig or inserted into the pipe as a self-running unit.
Using the pig location receiver, an acoustic signal on the headphones and an instrument
display enable exact location of the pig transmitter.
Description of use (Example)
A cleaning pig is to be run through a metal pipe several kilometres in length.
The pig could get stuck in view of the tight bends. To establish this position down to a
centimetre, the pig is fitted with a transmitter.
The pig transmitter is switched on and inserted into the foam-type cleaning pig. It then
transmits a powerful electro-magnetic signal which can be picked up beyond the Faraday
cage of the metal pipe.
This unit is placed into a pig trap. Before starting and with the pig trap closed, the pig
location receiver is placed into operation. The headphone volume and instrument
sensitivity can thus be optimally adapted to the expected depth and wall thickness of the
pipe. The locatable cleaning pig is now started and propelled on its way with the medium.
It then becomes clear after some time that the pig has got stuck. The line route is then
walked over with the ferrite search coil held vertically. The approach to the position being
sought is announced acoustically and optically some meters ahead. Directly above the pig
the signal suddenly stops. This clearly reveals its position down to a centimetre.
Deployment variants/Flexibility
Depending on the local conditions and requirements, the pig transmitters can, for
instance, be flanged onto the pigs, pulled along or fitted with cups for self-running.
To locate a line route the pig can be stopped at certain intervals. A number of points of the
line are then located in stages. Highly beneficial is the fact that this procedure rules out
any falsification from overcoupling onto other lines.
System location performance
Determining position down to a centimetre. Detecting the signal along the route
some 7- 8 m ahead of and behind the pig transmitter.
Location down to a 6 m depth depending on the pipe and covering material.
Depth determination
Pig transmitter
The pig transmitters consist of the battery (metal) and transmitter (plastic). In using
steel-walled pigs only the battery is inserted into the pig.
As a result, the transmitter is not additionally shielded and can deliver its full power. Both
sections are completely lined with silicon rubber and therefore particularly shock-resistant.
In the standard version the signal is transmitted in fixed cycles (0.5 s transmitting/
1.0 s pause). This lengthens the operating time and even when there is interference this
signal can still be clearly made out.
Pressure-resistant, oil-proof plastic housing up to 100 bar
Electronics operating temperature: -10 °C - +70 °C
Charging time: approx. 14 hours
Operating time: see Dimensions and operating Time
Raised temperatures and a constant signal lower the operating time
